GUS NEWPORT is a Berkeley legend, grass roots organizer, and “champion of the people.” With roots in the Civil Rights Movement, he was mentored by Malcolm X and helped found the Organization of African American Unity. Gus also served on the UN Committee Against Apartheid, the Committee on the Question of Palestine, and was an honorary member of the African National Congress. He also was one of the first U.S. mayors to ride in a Gay Freedom Day Parade (1979) and serves on the National Council of Elders.
“Everybody tells me I have to slow down. I tell them death will have to catch me.” –— Gus Newport

NOTE: All ticket-holders will receive a private link to the virtual event. In mid-March, we will ask you to let us know if you plan to attend in-person, so that we can plan accordingly — but you are free to change your mind and attend virtually.
FOR THOSE ATTENDING IN-PERSON: Currently, the Freight & Salvage requires everyone to bring personal ID and proof of vaccination and booster— and to wear an N95, KN95 or KF94 mask. Surgical masks are also acceptable. Anyone wearing a cloth mask only will be supplied with a surgical mask to wear under it. Bandanas or gaiters are not acceptable. Sorry but no exceptions to the above.
You can also mail a check for tickets ($25 – $500), and put “Gus Ticket” in the memo line. Be sure to include your phone number and email address. Mail to: MECA, 1101 8th Street, Berkeley CA 94710.
Event proceeds benefit MECA programs for Palestinian children.
